‘Begum Jaan’ has generated quite a buzz ever since the film’s trailer came out, and we believe it might generate enough curiousity amongst cine-goers. On account of its unique take on partition and the bold subject. With positive word of mouth, it can do even better, if the content is promising. Here’s why we think ‘Begum Jaan’ will create its niche among the audience:

The subject

‘Begum Jaan’ shows us a very different side to partition, it takes us to a different era and shows a story what happened to a brothel and women there because of it. The subject is very interesting and it is also showcased in an extremely intriguing manner, the glimpse of which we get in the trailer. The subject has novelty and will hopefully strike a chord with the audience.

The cast

Vidya Balan plays the madam of the brothel, and is seen in a very different avatar. She looks fierce and powerful even in the posters, and not to mention ferocious as exhibited in the trailers. The film also has an ensemble cast consisting of actors like Pallavi Sharda, Gauahar Khan, Ila Arun among many others. With the ongoing fad of women-centric films being welcomed at the box-office, one can even expect this one to strike a chord.

National-award winning director

Film-maker Srijit Mukherji has made about nine Bengali films, and has won a national award for best director for his film titled ‘Jaatishwar’. He is a well-known director making his Hindi cinema debut, and ‘Begun Jaan’ is also a remake of his Bengali film ‘Rajkahini’, which has won several accolades. So, the expectations from it are high.

The buzz

The trailer has created immense buzz. People have been talking about the film’s subject, Vidya Balan’s look and her power, not to mention, the actress uttering cuss words. With great actors, a promising director, one can expect the film to arouse curiousity. It releases on April 14.
