One of the most awaited films of this month or even the year perhaps is releasing next week in KALANK. One of the reasons why this is such an awaited films is its stellar cast. The last time we saw such a cast come together, especially for a drama, was KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA (2006) and KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM (2001).

Such multi starrer films have usually been a core part of the Hindi movies especially since the 70s and have been one of the biggest crowd pullers. We have seen films like AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY (1977) which had the cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Neetu Singh and Shabana Azmi. This leaving aside the likes of Pran, Jeevan and all. Another such film that comes to mind is NASEEB (1981), another Manmohan Desai film which had the cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Shatrugan Sinha, Hema Malini, Reena Roy. Besides them the film also had the likes of  Pran, Shakti Kapoor, Kader Khan, Prem Chopra and Amrish Puri. Such a cast would mean a guaranteed entertainer. Such multi starrer films usually are.

Another reason why crowds rush to watch such films is because the audiences are getting their money’s worth. Say in today’s times if audiences are paying Rs. 500 to see Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in a BADRINATH KI DULHANIA (2017); for the same amount in KALANK they get to see the chemistry of Sanjay Dutt with Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha.

Besides, judging from the trailer, the film promises to be a larger than life drama and if anything it has been proven that the audiences love such films and KKKG epitomizes that. Such films have proven to work time and again.

This year we see more multi starrer releases in BRAHMASTRA, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Mouni Roy, Akkineni Nagarjuna; RRR starring Jr. NTR, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn in prominent roles.

So with KALANK, it seems that this trend of multi starrers has been revived and hope it lasts long as nothing entertains more than such larger than life films starring multiple celebrities.

I certainly hope that more movies like such are attempted in the future and the trend of multi-starrers is back and here to stay.
