While we endeavor to discuss a wide breath of films each year, few things give us more pleasure than the arrival of bold new faces and voices. With evolving audience tastes and content overriding everything else, actors are keen to work with first-time directors. Gone are the days when actors would prefer to team up with their favorite directors, usually established names, over and over again. The good and entertaining films can only be made by the man behind the camera – the directors and their passion for film making. The year 2018 saw some of the best films churned out by debutant directors – Amar Kaushik ( Stree),  Rahi Anil Barve ( Tumbbad), Gauravv K.Chawla (Baazaar), Majid Majidi (Beyond the Clouds) and Tabrez Noorani (Love Sonia). We at Super Cinema list the finest directorial debut in 2018 that most impressed the film fraternity and the audience.


Amar Kaushik couldn’t have asked for a better debut having two popular names, Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, a well-known banner, Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, and script by directors, Raj and DK. However, Stree is Kaushik’s directorial debut as a filmmaker. He was associate director on the film Aamir, No One Killed Jessica, Go Goa Gone, Fukrey amongst others. Previously, he has also directed a short film Aaba, which was acclaimed at several international festivals. Aaba was backed by two notable names, Raj Kumar Gupta and Onir, he also assisted Onir who, along with Raj and DK, have played a part in shaping the director Amar Kaushik.  Stree became a super hit and the film was critically acclaimed and did wonders at the box office by breaking records among the small film world.


Rahi Anil Barve an Indian author, director and screenwriter.  He is known for his short-film Manjha.  His mainstream debut feature film was Tumbbad. The director shot the film over six years because he wanted to show real monsoon and not rely on artificial equipments. The film is breath-taking beautiful and irresistibly mysterious. A mythological-cum-horror movie about greed and fear, utterly refreshing and innovative, Tumbbad was a real mind-bender and the film’s top-notch production design truly reinvents the horror genre for Indian cinema. Barve also won Asia Focus Award at the Sitges film festival for Tumbbad.


Gauravv K. Chawla has been in the industry for over 10 years, and he has been assistant directors to many film-makers like Rohan Sippy and Shad Ali. He also assisted Nikkhil Advani for a while. Gauravv made his directorial debut with the film Baazaar starring Saif Ali Khan, debutant Rohan Mehra, Chitrangada Singh and Radhika Apte. The film was set in the backdrop of money, power and business largely based on the stock market.  The film was critically and commercial successful.


Majid Majidi is an Iranian film director, producer, and screenwriter, who started his film career as an actor. In his films, Majidi has touched on many themes and genres and has won numerous international awards.  Majid Majidi made his Bollywood debut with the film Beyond the Clouds, under the production banner Zee Studios, starring debutant Ishaan Katter and Malvika Mohanan.  The film was centered on bonding between the siblings, a take on human relationships in general. The film was premiered at BFI London film festival. Majidi’s previous films, including Children of Heaven, The Color of Paradise, Baran, The Song of Sparrows, and Muhammad: The Messenger of God. He has explored themes of love, friendship, matters of faith and human struggle. In between has worked on features and documentaries, Majidi has been trying to make a film in India for several years and finally made mark with Beyond the Clouds.


Tabrez Noorani made his Bollywood debut with Love Sonia. Noorani was inspired to make his debut feature after he was introduced to Human Trafficking in Los Angeles, when some girls were found in a shipping container from China. One of them was a young Indian girl. The incident inspired Noorani to work with non-governmental organizations focused on trafficking in Los Angeles. He has also participated in several brothel raids. The film was critically acclaimed and Love Sonia had its premiere at the London Film festival.
