Though the Indian Independent Music has always been rich and vibrant, yet it does not reflect very much in the mainstream media. To tap this creative potential of Today’s India and cater to their interests, Doordarshan has come up with a series – Rock the Night. The show will feature popular bands from across the country in every episode. The show is structured in a way that audience gets an idea of their music as well as gets to know them.
It is a known fact that , Rock Music is considered to be alien in our country and people discard it outright just by the sound of it which is considered to be Loud/Noisy. With this show, “Rock The night” Doordarshan endeavours to change that very attitude amongst the masses. The objective is not to present these bands as aliens with imported music but as one of those bands which are writing songs about common Indian people on issues that affect them.
Rock the Night is a show in which each episode is dedicated to one band which allows the audience to know their music and the band in entirety – their influences, their struggles and their Journey over the years. The show endeavours to provide a platform for discussion on independent music.
One striking point about the show is that the songs have been recorded LIVE (though mixed and mastered later for audio quality). Most music shows are not recorded live. This has been done to capture the rawness that Rock music is often associated with and also do justice to the bands which play live so flawlessly.
In the concluding address, DG Doordarshan , Ms. Sahu said , “This is an out-and-out In-House production. Concept, Direction, Set Erection, etc. have been done by staff of Doordarshan. This was highly applauded by the media and the guests present in the launch ceremony.
Doordarshan has always been a forerunner in providing out of the box content that touches upon myriad issues. Rock the Night is a salute to the torch bearers of independent music who have stayed true to their music despite adverse circumstances. Besides being a purely entertainment based show, it opens up a discourse on the current music scene in India. It endeavours to touch upon the lives of many youngsters who want to take up music as a career.
In the present scenario, where 90% songs are being remixed and served to the masses, Rock the Night will prove to be a fresh break with new bands from different parts of the country playing their 100% original music. The show will feature the bands from all over the country.
The launch ceremony was excellent , where performance of each band was lauded by the audience . The audience enjoyed each and every song and carried away by the independent original music.
I congratulate DG Doordarshan for conceiving such a brilliant idea for creating such an excellent new programme, which was required long ago. I also congratulate and her officers and staff for implementing her idea and giving it a practical shape, as we see it today. I wish that this programme will be a great success and soon become very popular.
