2017 started off with a lot of promise. We here at Super Cinema had done a few editorials and other stories on how 2017 really had a chance to make the difference. In terms of the start it was perfect with audiences coming to the cinemas when on Republic Day weekend two mega movies Shah Rukh Khan’s RAEES and Hrithik Roshan’s KAABIL both opened well and in their own right had a good outing at the box-office. RAEES obviously went on to do 129 crores at the box-office in India. Although January had some disappointments as well with OK JAANU the worst off the lot in the first month.
When February rolled in Akshay Kumar high off the super successful 2016 looked to add to his mega year at the movie with a hit to start off this year as well and he did just that with JOLLY LLB 2 which went on to a lifetime total of around 108 crores. On the other hand a bi-lingual THE GHAZI ATTACK really surprised one and all with a great run at the box-office by collection just over 20 cores from its Hindi version. While movies like RANGOON, IRADA and RUNNING SHAADI tanked at the box-office.
If in the first two months it was established superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar, then the month of March belonged to the young stars of today i.e. Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt who gave a rock solid BADRINATH KI DULHANIA which went on to do a business of 115 crores at the national box-office. However the other releases of the month couldn’t do anything worthwhile at the box-office. But what BKD did was that it became the highest grossing movie of March since 2008 (introduction of the 100 crore club).
But it seems that the party stopped for Bollywood after the first quarter. From April on wards hardly anything has worked. Which is very shocking and alarming at the same time. All the major Hindi releases in April tanked very badly including the likes of BEGUM JAAN and NOOR the latter went on to be a major dud at the box-office. But this month also gave Hindi movies and our filmmakers sleepless nights not because of the disastrous month at the movies but because of BAHUBALI – THE CONCLUSION which has till date done a business of 509 crores from its Hindi DUBBED version alone in the country. The movie has not only opened eyes of the filmmakers but also got the audiences to believe in the magic of movies and sheer vision of a filmmaker. BAHUBALI 2 is the highest grossing Hindi movie that the Hindi film industry has not even produced! May was a decent month however, with Irffan Khan starrer HINDI MEDIUM becoming the sleeper hit of the year by a country mile. The movie was adored by the audiences and went on to do a business of 63 crores nationwide. The documentary SACHIN A BILLION DREAMS also went on to do solid business in the country. The film was released in five languages and collected a decent 45 crores overall. Arjun Kapoor’s HALF GIRLFRIEND did half decent business and managed to collect 53 crores. But everything else this month once again tanked. June has high hopes from it. But the way the audiences rejected the Salman Khan starrer TUBELIGHT it has shocked one and all. The movie won’t even get to the lifetime number of 120 crores which is unheard off . June also saw the other mega disaster RAABTA which was rejected by the cinegoers from day one.
No one could have imagined the last three months would have turned out to be like this especially the way the year began for the industry. We sincerely hope that the audiences turn up for the movies in the second half of the year![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
