2016 has been a dismal year at the movies. We as a film fraternity churned out over 200 movies in a calendar year and only 14 of them gave any sort of return on investment. If that wasn’t enough, the industry also recorded the worst footfalls in the last decade. That only means one thing; fewer people are going actively to watch movies throughout the year.

Let’s not get into the qualities of movies because I personally feel it’s a subjective thing. But having said that it doesn’t change the fact that the movies which we are bringing out are simply been rejected overall. The average ticket prices are going through the roof and with a lack of overall screen numbers things look bleak as ever. Many might argue that we have some good movie releases in 2016 and I agree with them. But the fact is that we need to double, triple and quadruple that basic number. Only then can we really boast of healthy industry.

But if we are something in this industry then that one tract is being optimistic. We have to be optimistic of the year ahead and 2017 really looks good on paper. With a great sense of realism in our movies, gone are the days of the over the top unrealistic films and the lineup of 2017 looks to be following it to the hilt. Many a studios might have shut their shops but the point is that movies are always going to be made. This industry rarely slows its operations and with some great movies to look forward to it looks like it will be a great year at the movies for the fraternity.

Movies like Salman Khan’s TUBELIGHT and TIGER ZINDA HAI. Shah Rukh Khan has RAEES, Imtiaz Ali’s next and Anand L Rai’s next. Akshay Kumar has got JOLLY LLB 2, PADMAN, 2.0 and TOILET EK PREM KATHA. There is Hrithik Roshan’s KAABIL. Ranbir Kapoor starrer JAGGA JASOOS. Varun Dhawan’s BADRINATH KI DHULANIA and JUDWAA 2. Ajay Devgn has two big releases in BAADSHAHO and GOLMAAL AGAIN. Arjun Kapoor has two major releases in HALF GIRLFRIEND and MUBARKAAN. There is BAHUBALI: THE CONCLUSION up for releases in April as well. There is Aamir Khan’s backed SECRET SUPERSTAR. There is Sushant Singh Rajput’s RAABATA up for release as well and then there is Sidharth Malhotra’s RELOAD too. There is Vishal Bhardwaj’s RANGOON and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s PADMAVATI up for release this year as well. Add to that the possibility of a Rajkumar Hirani’s next staring Ranbir Kapoor based on the life of Sanjay Dutt! And these are only some of the top most anticipated movies of the year there is a whole line up of movies which are just as exciting as any of these big budget ones. Let’s try and have a breakthrough year in terms of box office collections and quality of movies. Have a happy 2017 and see you at the movies! Trade Magazine
