CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Synopsis:

CRIMINAL JUSTICE is a remake of the UK show by the same name. A one nights stand turns into a nightmare for Aditya, when he wakes up with blood on his hands and next to a corpse. All the evidence is stacked against him, but he doesn’t remember the crime. Is he guilty of the crime or no, is the main premise of the show.

What it is all about:

Aditya Sharma (Vikrant Massey) is a college student doing his MBA. His family owns a First Cab (something like Uber/Ola). He sometimes helps out by driving around during surge pricing to make extra money. One night, he picks up a passenger, Sanaya Rath (Madhurima Roy) and she forgets her phone in the cab. He goes back to her apartment to return the phone and they just hit it off; as it also turns out that they go to the same college. They end up sleeping together after having a few shots of whiskey and some drugs. When Aditya wakes up, he finds himself covered in blood and Sanaya stabbed multiple times and he having no memory of the night. From here the story divulges in two parts; his lawyer Madhav Mishra (Pankaj Tripathi), trying to prove his innocence and the other part follows Aditya’s journey in Jail and how he transforms. Is he guilty or is he innocent? The answer to this question can only be answered by watching the series.

What we liked:

CRIMINAL JUSTICE dwells deeper into the aspect of the crime and shows how everyone is affected by the crime, unlike a majority of the crime shows we see. The show’s premise is quite interesting, albeit it being a remake, and the makers have done a great job of making it engaging to the audiences. The script again is brilliantly written and the show has been directed superbly as well. Most importantly, what’s great about this show are the performances. Vikrant Massey does really well. Pankaj Tripathi is great as usual. Jackie Shroff is amazing too.

What we didn’t like:

While the main story arc remained the same, the side arc could have been better and more interesting. For instance, THE NIGHT OF, another remake of the original CRIMINAL JUSTICE, had strong political subtext – it was also a takedown of the American legal system, and a blunt critique of post 9/11 racism. The show also has pacing issues and the cliffhangers become a little predictable.
