The controversial chief of Central Board of Film Certification, producer Pahalaj Nihalani has finally ended his regime which was the bane of many producers and directors who were handed cuts and bans by Nihalani though he always maintained that he was only following the diktats of the rules and regulations of the Censor Board. He was right but the producers and directors who came under fire maintained that it was unjust and that it should only be a Film Certification Board and not a Film Censor Board. Producers like Prakash Jha and director Alankrita Srivastava of Lipstick Under My Burkha who fought with Nihalani and finally won and their film turned out to be the surprise hit of the year. That’s poetic justice if one can call it so. Cuss words was also something he came down heavily on and his recent objection of a large number of cuss words in the Kushan Nandy directorial venture Babumoshai Bandookbaaz which were given a record number of 48 cuts with hardly anything remaining of the original film which led Nandy to run from pillar to post to get his film passed. He wanted to ban any form of drinking or smoking which he felt would spoil our youth. Nihalani said that just putting a disclaimer on any corner of the screen wouldn’t help. He found the word ‘intercourse’ to be offensive when uttered by SRK in When Jab Harry Met Sejal, and it created a huge controversy. Though it was just a few months before his tenure ended, he has been replaced by the mild mannered soft lyricist and ad man Prasoon Joshi who we believe was the choice of the new Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani who was brought in because Venkaaiah Naidu, the veteran BJP spokesman and now the Vice President of India vacated the place of the Information and Broadcasting Minister. Nihalani was lampooned as being the ‘sanskaari’ old timer who believed in age old norms and never noticed how developed the entertainment industry had become. But now even Prasoon Joshi is said to be close to the PM and had created the song for the Swaach Bharatiya Abhiyaan and has written lyrics for films like Rang De Basanti and hopefully he is a rational man. Good Luck to Prasoon Joshi! Trade Magazine
