Amitabh Bachchan, who has won as many accolades as one can in the industry has added yet another feather on his already decorated cap. This past week it was announced that he has been unanimously selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. This was confirmed by the Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar in a tweet.

Amitabh has been awarded with the Padma Shri in 1984. In 2001, he was feted with the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. He was also conferred with France’s highest civilian honour, the Knight of the Legion of Honour, by the French Government in 2007 for his “exceptional career in the world of cinema and beyond”. He has also won the prestigious National Award for his performances in ‘Agneepath’, ‘Black’, ‘Paa’ and ‘Piku’.

It comes as no surprise to anyone in the industry when it was announced that he has won the award. To many in the industry, including myself it was only just a matter of time before he added another trophy to his collection! He has had a career spanning over five decades in the industry. That is an achievement in its own. What is even more impressive and inspiring is that even now, after five decades in the industry, his dedication, love and the effort he puts into each of the film is still the same, or in fact it is even more than when he worked on his first film.

He has truly redefined the Indian cinema with the kind of films and the roles that he has done.  Over the past few decades, he has built for himself a filmography which is, to put it simply – phenomenal. He has constantly set benchmarks with his performances and he continues to set the benchmarks higher and higher, even now. We could sit a whole day just discussing his achievements and his contribution to the Indian Cinema and even that wouldn’t be enough. There is not a single superlative that I can think of when I try to describe the actor and a human that he is, mainly because none could do him justice.

As modest and humble that he is, when he constantly keeps saying that he is blessed to be a part of this industry and to be able to receive the love of the millions of people, the truth is and will always be that it is us who are truly blessed to have a legend like him in our industry.
