RK Studios started in the early 40’s was a witness to many Raj Kapoor classics and many other films shot there and the recent studio fire on Stage 4 of the studios destroyed many costumes and other memorabilia of the classics shot over the years. Many people would be dumb founded to know that the land for the studio was acquired by Raj Kapoor from the great Marathi film director Bhalji Pendharkar for just a rupee one as token money as Chembur (Deonar)was a jungle at that time and civilization had not stepped in the suburb. But now the cost of the property runs into crores of rupees and the Kapoors especially Randhir Kapoor was keen to run the studio and many television shoots were held there as it was preferred for its big stages especially for reality shows and one such dance reality show had to bear the brunt of the fire which enveloped the Stage and everything was destroyed. RK Studios which was a landmark for Hindi films and cine-goers and one could always see the huge statue of Lord Shiva in its premises and one could visualize the great Awaara set for the dream sequence. Raj Kapoor had instructed his sons never to sell the studio but they were undergoing huge financial losses and there was some loose talk that some builder had taken over the studio. But RK was always known for its grandeur and Randhir Kaapoor had made ‘Henna’ which was a hit and Rishi Kapoor had directed ‘Aa Ab Laut Chalen’ which didn’t too well and the youngest Rajeev Kapoor had made Prem Granth which too was a fiasco and one could only rest on the memories of ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ and ‘Prem Rog’. It was also a symbol for the entire industry known for its Holi celebrations and the Ganpati festival for which Rishi Kapoor always led the procession. Also the Kapoor daughters Karisma and Kareena are big stars and they could have had big plans for the studio. And such fires are not new as many TV show sets have been engulfed in fire in Film city and other studios and more care needs to be taken by the producers to keep the studio sets safe and the wiring should always be double checked by the workers before shooting. Or insurance should be taken by studios like RK Studios who have much to stake for and this will also help the producers too. RK Studios is a national heritage site and should be declared so as many tourists from all over India and abroad come to see the studio as RK is a big name in Russia and China. It’s our ardent plea to the management of the studio to restore the studio for greater glories ahead and the Kapoor’s should produce more films and revive the RK banner to its former fame and glory. A fire on one set is not a major issue but the danger to the derelict studios of today is a big eye opener and the studios should pull up its socks to save the studios from fire and other calamities. So the RK Dream Sequence and its logo of RK and Nargis should always be a part of our film history! Jeena Yahan Marna Yahaan! Trade Magazine
