When the releases of the film were lined up early on in the year, I was having a conversation with some of my friends and we said that wow !, November looks like a month of sequels. We are in November and we have already had ROCK ON 2, FORCE 2, TUM BIN 2, CHAAR SAHIBZAADE 2 released. We still have KAHAANI 2 up for release in a couple of weeks time as well. That’s way too many sequels in a very little time.

We have already had nine other sequel and tri-quel releases this year. Movies like KYAA KOOL HAI HUM 3, GREAT GRAND MASTI, TERE BIN LADEN: DEAD OR ALIVE, HOUSEFULL 3, RAAZ REBOOT, 1920: LONDON, GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN, JAI GANGAAJAL and TERAA SURROOR. Only HOUSEFULL 3 and Ghayal Once Again  has been a clear cut winner in all the sequel which have released this year thus far with the fate of the recently released ROCK ON 2 also in the negative , it is actually a scary situation.

Fair point that ROCK ON 2 had to face the major brunt of the demonetization situation. But the other releases which are all major ones haven’t really painted a pretty picture for the rest of the sequel clan. Movies which are irrelevant or worked as a one off  shouldn’t be really lined up as a sequel anyways. Take the RAAZ franchise for instance. It works on the supernatural and the erotic space. But the new RAAZ REBOOT which released a few months back wasn’t promoted like it was either. As a result the movie completely tanked and a franchise was killed.

The last movie in MASTI series actually collected a little over 90 crores in India box-office. The new one, GREAT GRAND MASTI looked likely to create better benchmarks in the adult comedies genre but the movie got leaked online three whole weeks prior to its release and as a result tanked miserably at the box-office. But the fate of this one for whatever the reason and the no-show of KYAA KOOL HAIN HUM 3 earlier in the year effectively meant that the genre of adult comedies was completely off  the table. No new movies in the genre are being planned, period. And some have been ready for release for a long time.

I personally feel the reason for the sudden dip in the form of the sequels not working is down to three major reasons. One is that the kind of the movies that are being made and second is the almost over-kill nature we in the industry like to approach something that works for someone else. And lastly, the makers need to check if the sequels those they’re making are they even relevant to the times now. But I’m an optimistic guy, I know for a fact that for instance, there is enough craze/buzz for a movie like KAHAANI 2 which releases in a couple of week’s time. And even the new releases from this week have shown some decent trend on day one in terms of the occupancy especially FORCE 2. Given the cash situation in the country is improving on a daily basis some sort of normalization can be expected in the weeks to come as well. So if the makers get their act together and  plan and plot their sequels with a little bit of intelligence and foresight we might be talking about the upward swing of sequels in the months to come for sure.
