THE ACCIDENTAL PRIME MINISTER is the story of the ex PM of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh. The filmis based on the book written by his media advisor from 2004-2009, Sanjay Baru. In 2004, the United Progressive Alliance wins the Lok Sabha elections. Everyone thinks that it is Sonia Gandhi (Suzanne Bernert), the then president of Indian National Congress and the chairperson of the UPA who will be sworn in as the PM of India. But, the opposition cites that she not being a natural born citizen of India cannot be the PM as that would go against the Constitution of India. Hence Sonia then had to find someone who is capable and also has the confidence of the other members of the UPA, to take up the post of the PM. After careful deliberation she asks Dr. Manmohan Singh to be India’s next PM and he agrees and is sworn in. But soon he realizes that he is more like a face and all the major decisions would be taken by Sonia Gandhi and her subordinate Ahmed Patel (Vipin Sharma). Dr. Manmohan Singh meanwhile asks journalist Sanjaya Baru (Akshaye Khanna) to be his media advisor. Sanjaya knows Dr. Singh since more than a decade and has utmost respect for him. He tries his best to strengthen his image in the media and continuously tells him to make himself heard. Dr. Manmohan Singh however is too soft spoken and has no qualms in letting others take credit for his work. He also has no problems in being controlled by Sonia Gandhi and also by her son Rahul Gandhi (Arjun Mathur), who was being groomed for becoming India’s next PM. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

The film had a very interesting premise, but the screenplay and more like the execution turns out to be a letdown. The film is only helped by the performances.

Technically the film is okay. Cinematography by Sachin Krishn is decent. Editing by Praveen K.L. was okay. The VFX in the film is disappointingly bad. There is no scope for music in this film. The production design was quite nice. The script was weak.

Performance from the actors is what kept this film afloat. Anupam Kher as Dr. Manmohan Singh was convincing and delivers a good and an honest performance. Akshaye Khanna is superb and nails his performance. Suzanne Bernert is convincing as Sonia Gandhi. Arjun Mathur does well. Aahana Kumra does good in her less screentime. The rest of the cast do well and offer abled support.

Director Vijay Ratnakar Gutte could have made a great film but fails to do justice to the subject matter at hand but is able to get good performances from his actors.

At the box-office

The film has got off to a decent start and with the controversy the film will easily be more than a plus to its investors.
