On November 8th, 2016 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi discontinued the 500 and 1000 rupees notes like every single Indian, Bollywood too had to face major huddles. Most of the movies released post the 8th of November tanked at the box-office. The reason could have been anything but everyone in the industry had got a new thing to blame their lackluster movies for i.e. demonetization.  Barring maybe the Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt starrer DEAR ZINDAGI which did half decent business!

So when last week’s mega release DANGAL starring Aamir Khan was up for release many in the trade thought that the movie might not be able to do tremendous business overall due the demonetization issue as well. How off  the mark were they all. Last week in this very column I had written that Aamir Khan is going to the dull year that was 2016 with DANGAL and this is actually my, I told you so moment. DANGAL has done some mind blowing business especially given the circumstances. The movie opened to huge number on Friday and then grew furthermore so on the Saturday.

But on the Sunday which was also the Christmas Day the movie collected a whooping 41.60 crores making it the highest single day collection ever recorded in the industry. The last movie to hold on to the biggest single day collections was Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor starrer PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO (39.20 cr.) which releases last year on Diwali. Now almost a year later Aamir has broken that elusive record by a far distance as well. DANGAL, has become the first movie to collect at an average of 20 crores every day of the week except for Thursday. The movie just on a phenomenal run even the early estimates for its eighth day is around 17 crores which is going to be the highest eighth day total ever recorded, the earliest highest is PK which had done around 14 crores.

By the end of its first week itself, DANGAL has already become the second highest grossing movie of the year. This has been a proper lull year at the movies, the gap between the SULTAN and MS DHONI: THE UNTOLD STORY was more than double in terms of box-office take home. So for DANGAL to achieve what it has done in its first week itself is brilliant especially given the whole demonetization issue! This only goes to prove that Aamir Khan is demonetization proof.
