We in the film industry are not really a talent centric one. We are an industry which works on star power and we can deny that as much as we want but that is the fact. So this got me thinking what can be the one factor we love our stars. What is that one thing that sets them apart from all the other actors in the running.

Salman Khan is one star who is the best when it comes to audience pull. Nine out of 10 times his movies open the best on day one. Most of those times his movies go on to do great weekend numbers too.

Next in line is Aamir Khan, he is the one who gets the movies to an overall great number. His track record since 2008 is simply scary almost all his movies since that time have been the highest grossing movies the industry has seen.

There is Shah Rukh Khan in that mix too; he is one the biggest names in the industry. Of late however he has trickled down the top of the list, mainly because of the total box-office returns his movies has got.

This nicely sets up with a star like Akshay Kumar. If there is an actor who is Mr. Consistency, it has be Akshay. He has shown great growth and year on year and movie after movie he seems to be getting better at the box-office game.

We looked at the last two years for all these stars, and also hypothetically give a mark up of numbers we feel their movies will get to once they release this year. Lets start with Salman Khan first, in 2015 he had BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN and PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO which went on to do a collective box-office total of 515 crores. In 2016, Salman had SULTAN which went on to do a box-office total of 300 crores. This year in 2017, he will have TUBELIGHT and TIGER ZINDA HAI which we feel will get on to a box-office total of 650 crores. So in three years Salman is sitting pretty on a total of 1465 crores, give or take.

Next up, Akshay Kumar. In 2015, Akshay had four releases in BABY, GABBAR IS BACK, BROTHERS and SINGH IS BLING which managed a overall total of 310 crores for him. In 2016, Akshay had three releases AIRLIFT, HOUSEFULL 3 and RUSTOM which got to a overall total of 360 crores. This year he has had one release already (JOLLY LLB 2) and three more movies lined up TOILET EK PREM KHATA, 2.0 and PADMAN his estimated 2017 earnings according to us right now could get him to around 470 crores for the year. So in three years Akshay has amounted to an overall total of 1140 crores.

Aamir Khan in the last two years has had only one release which was 2016’s monster blockbuster DANGAL. The movie went on to do a lifetime total of 380 crores. He doesn’t have any releases this year.

Shah Rukh Khan in 2015 released, DILWALE which went on to do a lifetime total of 140 crores. In 2016 his two releases FAN and DEAR ZINDAGI went to do a overall total of 155 crores. While this year he has already had RAEES come out and his next tentatively titled THE RING is also up for release and we feel this year SRK could get to do another 330 crores at the box-office, bringing his three year total to 625 crores.

While other stars are doing lesser work, Akshay has been constantly coming up with movies which eventually turn profitable. Strangely he is yet to cross the 140 crores mark in any of his movies till date, but that is not stopping him to work round the clock and churn out movies like he is an assembly line. For Akshay to be next in line to Salman might surprise many but numbers don’t lie and you can see the same trend of two or movies followed by Shah Rukh Khan now too who looks likely to have two release this year and in 2018 as well.

They say, strength lies in numbers and both Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are proving that proverb correct with their dealings.

Next week, we will look at younger actors in the industry and who ranks the best amongst them! Watch this space! Trade Magazine
