Salman Khan has been sentenced to five years in jail for hunting protected species of Indian Antelope. In 1998, Salman Khan was accused of killing two blackbucks, an endangered species, in Jodhpur. After two decades, he was convicted by Jodhpur Court, and sentenced to five years of jail this past week. The public prosecutors alleged that Salman and 4 other actors in the car with him, fled the scene when they were spotted leaving the carcasses of the animal behind. The other actors, among them Tabu, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam, were acquitted by the court in Jodhpur for the lack of evidence.

Along with the 5 years sentence, he has also been fined INR 10,000. The bail appeal was adjourned to Saturday morning with the court asking the lawyers to produce previous case records. As that is when this week’s issue goes to the press, we don’t know yet if he gets the bail or not. His counsel have prepared a 51 page bail application too. Khan was also immediately taken to Jodhpur Central Jail after visiting a local hospital for a medical examination.

The killing of the buck was illegal, yes and should not go unpunished. But after 20 years the verdict that is a five years jail sentence is way too harsh. A higher amount of fine and contributing more to the society and doing more community service is what could’ve been the best outcome for all the parties involved and with is name and fame, he is already doing that and he could’ve done a lot more to help the community.

The actor is a very important part of the trade as a whole and this is going to affect everyone in the trade. Khan at an average does two films yearly and as an entity he brings in INR 700 crores to the industry every time he goes out and does a film. That is a huge number. The actor is at the peak of his career and 5 years in Jail is too harsh and is going to leave a massive effect on the industry.

We hope that a quick outcome could come from this and the actor can get back to helping the industry reach far greater goals. He is ready with his next RACE 3 which is up for release on Eid this year and the filmmakers have just finished filming the last schedule of the movie this past week in Abu Dhabi as well.
