AJEEB DASTAANS is an anthology of four different stories that touch upon the subject of loveless marriages, broken hearts, secret identities among other things.
The film directed by Shashank Khaitan stars Fatima Sana Shaikh and Jaideep Ahlawat in the lead tells the story of a man forced to marry a woman he hardly knows. The plot is promising but it doesn’t really convert so well on the screen. The film falls flat due to a bad execution. Although the actors give a good performance, it isn’t enough to lift the film up. It opens on an odd note and sets the tone for the rest of the film and you know it’s not ever going to get better. The screenplay, execution and direction fall flat the only promising thing was the plot which went unfulfilled.
KHILAUNA directed by Raj Mehta, stars Nushrat Bharucha & Abhishek Banerjee in the leading roles. The film tells the story of what happens when a woman, who works as a house help and her friend land in trouble after a turn of unexpected events. Nushrat and Abhishek, both give a sincerely brilliant performance. The plot is really nice and the writing too. Although the execution feels a little forced and hence the impact of the unexpected climax is not so much.
GEELI PUCCHI directed by Niraj Ghaywan starring Konkona Sensharma and Aditi Rao Hydari is the best film of the lot, without a shadow of doubt. Instead of letting story drive his short film, Ghaywan lets his characters take the lead and it results into a beautiful layered story which sheds a light on caste bias, gender issues and also touches upon the subject of sexuality; and the best part is that all these subplots gel well together with the main plot and end result is for all to see. Performances from Aditi and Konkana were brilliant as expected. This film really takes the whole cake; it’s very well deserved. Ghaywan is a massively talented filmmaker.
ANKAHI directed by Kayoze Irani stars Shefali Shah and Manav Kaul in the leading roles. The film tells the story of a married woman and her hearing impaired lover. This film boasts of the best performance by far in the whole film, and not taking anything away from the other actors in the film but Shefali and Manav strike a chord with their performances. All the nuances and the important things required of them, they got it bang on. The characters were also very well written which was only brought to life with their performance. The climax is a little unexpected too but it works very well.
There was no common theme between the four films as such but there was one thing common – all four films boast of an unexpected climax, but only 2 of them earn it. No guesses here for which films.
